The Rainbow Alley's Queer Prom is coming up again, and we're looking for volunteers to help chaperon the event. Adult chaperon's help ensure that the event is fun and safe for everyone, and volunteering at the Queer Prom has been a CU SNPhA tradition for the past few years. It's a lot of fun and a great way to get in touch with the local LGBTQ community.

Diabetes Initiative

 

We will be providing the following screenings: blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, early kidney disease screening, and Osteoporosis. We will also be doing “Ask the Pharmacist” so please bring DI Handbooks, or other useful reference books, if you have them.   Skills attire, including lab coat, is required as usual. Don’t forget your experiential forms so you can get credit for your support!

HIV/AIDS Initiative - “Remember the Ribbon”

The 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) fundraising walk and run begin and end in
Denver's beautiful Cheesman Park. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. The
opening ceremony will begin at 9:00 a.m. featuring special guests and
speakers. The AIDS Run will kick off at 9:30 a.m. with the AIDS Walk
stepping off immediately following the last runner.

To register or donate with SNPhA's team, visit the AIDS Walk Colorado website at www.aidswalkcolorado.org, and make sure to join the Student National Pharmaceutical Association team when you register.

(You do not have to donate to register, and you do not have to register to walk.)

We will meet in Cheesman Park at 8:45am for snacks before heading out for the walk.

Pharmacy Day with Oakland Elementary School

Anschutz Medical Campus, January 14th 2009, 9am to 2pm

Oakland Elementary School’s 3rd grade class will be coming to Anschutz Medical Campus on January 14, 2009 for a fun day with pharmacy students to learn aboutwhat pharmacists do.

Activities for the day include a Poison Prevention game, learning about the importance of accurate measurement, a fun Compounding Activity, a short skit about pharmacy put on by the pharmacy students, and a mock White Coat Ceremony for the kids.

30 volunteers are needed from 9:00am to 2:00pm to help set up, clean up, and facilitate the various activities. Coffee, snacks, and lunch will be provided!

Multicultural Food Fair

Members of SNPhA volunteering will bring different food dishes that are representative of that student’s culture.  Other students and faculty are then invited to sample the different dished in return for donations.  The money donated at the food fair will go to the DIFHS clinic to help supply patients with medications, such as fish oil for dyslipidemia. 

DIHFS Chart Reviews

At the Denver Indian Health and Family Services, students sign up to come and review patient charts.  During this review the student will check for medication appropriateness and efficacy or toxicity.  Students also make recommendations on how to treat patients.  These recommendations are then presented to the pharmacy preceptor at the clinic, and then are later given to the prescribers to consider at that patient’s next appointment.

SNPhA/Rho Chi Clothing Drive

SNPhA is teaming up with Rho Chi to collect donations for the annual clothing drive.  The entire pharmacy school is invited to donate clothes for men, women, and children that will then be donated to local homeless shelters.  The need for clothing is great during the winter months when more people are using and staying at homeless shelters,  SNPhA and Rho Chi hope the event will be a great success.

 

Wellspring Health Fair

SNPhA members will help run the Wellspring Health Fair.  This event offers screenings of: blood pressure, blood glucose, osteoporosis, micoralbuminuria, and cholesterol.  There will also be opportunity for patient counseling with an “ask the pharmacist” type activity.  Another unique opportunity for students is to participate in dental screenings by helping dental professionals with their screening activities.  The event is open to the public but majority of patients that come are Hispanic, underserved, and don’t see a health care provider regularly. 

 

Point of Care Refresher Clinic

To help students become more familiar with point of care activities SNPhA will hold an event to practice these different techniques.  Some of the activities to be practiced are checking blood glucose levels, obtaining cholesterol readings, blood pressure readings, bone density screening, and microalbuminuria.  It will be a great opportunity to enhance skills before health fairs start.

Black Church Initiative: Diabetes Classes

Dr. Bi Ndikum runs diabetes education classes for local patients.  Students volunteer to come to the classes and offer counseling to the patients about how and why to take medications.  Students work directly with the patients in an interview format to help the patients understand their disease states and medications.

We are organizing an event to encourage students to register to vote. Voting this year is a crucial part of being an active member of the community and no matter which candidate each member supports, it is important to state that opinion.

In order to raise money for the AIDS Walk, members of SNPhA are making cookies and other sweets.  Students and faculty are welcome to "give donations" for the cookies. 

Between donations from the cookies, individual donations and SNPhA matching money raised, our chapter raised $510 for the event. 

Fundraising: OTC Notebooks

SNPhA is selling OTC Notebooks to the incoming first year students.  These notebooks are intended to keep Professional Skills worksheets organized, and those students that purchased the notebooks would get an answer key to worksheets from the class the week after they were due.

UCD SNPhA is providing Top 200 Drug Cards to incoming first year pharmacy students, and updates for other students who have bought the cards in past years.  Each new packet of drug cards is selling for $50 and updates are $10.
